THE HUMAN AT THE HELM

William Rock.

Founder of William Rock LLC. Curious human, digital investigator, occasional inventor—and the person responsible for whatever's happening in The Boathouse.

See what I work on

Hi, I'm William. I've spent much of my career figuring out how search, marketing, websites, data and technology fit together—and why they sometimes don't.

I work across technical SEO, paid search, digital strategy, analytics and practical AI systems. I enjoy the challenges that don't arrive with a neat explanation: an unexpected signal, a complicated migration, a campaign that needs a second look, or a useful idea that's not quite a product yet.

I like asking questions. I like building things. And I like leaving people with an answer they can actually use—not a mysterious report that only its author understands.

William Rock LLC is how I bring those interests together. It's an independent consultancy built on curiosity, careful investigation and respect for the people affected by the work.

FROM THE CAPTAIN'S LOG

A few things the tidy bio leaves out.

There's more to the human behind The Boathouse than browser tabs, dashboards and carefully labeled evidence.

Before the browser tabs

Wildland firefighting and teaching people to ski came before much of the digital work. Very different terrain, but the same instinct: pay attention, work the problem and respect what can go wrong.

Curiosity is a contact sport.

Fishing, building things, strange technology and the occasional rabbit hole have one thing in common: I want to know how it works, why it works—and what happens if we try it another way.

The captain still decides.

AI can help explore possibilities, test ideas and organize information. Accountability, judgment and the decision to act stay with a real human. That's the whole point.

RULES FROM THE WORKSHOP

Curious. Careful. Useful.

The Boathouse may be playful, but these are real principles behind the work.

Do no harm.

A clever technical fix isn't clever if it damages what already works. Understand dependencies, respect ownership and consider consequences before making changes.

Show the evidence.

Facts, hypotheses and unanswered questions should never be mistaken for one another. Unknown doesn't mean zero, and an attractive explanation isn't proof.

Leave the lights on.

Document what matters, explain decisions and share useful knowledge. Someone else should be able to understand what happened and pick up where we left off.

THE CREW

I work alone. I don't think alone.

The Boathouse includes a fictional crew of curious personalities inspired by the different perspectives good work needs. They aren't employees or independently operating consultants. They're a way to keep investigations human, understandable and a little more interesting.

Six curious members of the fictional Ship’s Company. Start with Caffeinated Rabbit’s seven-chapter origin story, then choose from ten Rabbit Warren adventures. The real work remains human-led and evidence-first.

THE UNUSUAL ROUTE

Not every interesting path is a straight line.

My work has always been about understanding things from more than one angle. Marketing is connected to technology. Technology is connected to people. And a problem that looks small from the outside can turn out to have a much more interesting story underneath.

That's probably why I'm drawn to investigations, experiments and unusual ideas. Sometimes the best way forward starts by questioning how we got here.

And when we learn something useful, I believe it deserves to be passed along.

What are you curious about?

You don't need a perfect brief, a polished pitch or a detailed technical explanation. A good question is enough to start.

Tell me what you're working on, what's not making sense or what you'd love to build. We'll see whether I can help and what a useful next step looks like.
